Cake No. 200!
For my 200th cake since I started decorating, I wanted to go overboard and attempt something really difficult. Matt said he’d love to have a Legion of Super-Heroes cake. Done. Eight hours to pipe 24 characters on a full-sheet cake. I don’t think I’ll ever do that again! Thanks to comics artist Gary Frank for some awesome inspiration! I’ve also updated my cake gallery on ...

Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra
Audrey’s first word was “yay!” when she was only 8 months old, 4 months before kids generally start talking. She’s always been very expressive vocally, and now we’re realizing she’s equally as creative. At 3, now she’s created her own language. I call it “Darmok.” Here’s where all that sci-fi knowledge I’ve squirreled away helps...
Fortune for me is unfortunate for you
My latest fortune cookie: “You will be called upon to help a friend in trouble.” OK, gang. Although I am happy to help any one of you at any time, I don’t want to see anyone in trouble. So watch it. Don’t believe in fortune cookies? I don’t either. Most of the time they are proverbs rather than fortunes anyway. But I have received a couple that have been dead-on. The...
Flicks (and ticks) of 2007
My husband LOVES lists. It’s his way of organizing this thoughts. He took his Best of 2007 Movie List very seriously. He should. It’s part of his job. However, my list is a bit different. Matt and I will have some of the same movies on our 2007 lists, but he’s a certified critic. He watches a lot of movies whether he thinks he’ll like them or not. He grades the movies based...
Precious babies
Not a lot rhymes with Miranda. Memoranda, propoganda, Uganda. Let’s face it, the cutest rhyme is panda. It also just happens that Miranda shares a birthday with the world’s newest panda cub. Zhen Zhen, which means “precious” in Chinese, was born Aug. 3, in the San Diego Zoo. Zhen Zhen, a girl, seems to share personality traits with our Miranda. Zookeepers say Zhen Zhen is...
Green is my favorite color
I have mixed feelings about home makeover shows. Extreme Makeover Home Edition? Love it. Sometimes it makes me cry. Shows on H&G Network? I don’t know. Sometimes they bore me to tears. I’ve never been one to paint walls on a whim. I’m not that daring. If I didn’t like the color, I know it’d be an ordeal to change it back. Dolling up the website, on the other...
Miranda milestones
Aug. 3: After 17 hours of labor, Miranda was born. I was exhilarated and exhausted. Sept 17: Miranda smiles for the first time. Since then, she has smiled at virtually everyone she’s ever met — especially the boys. Oct. 31: Miranda dresses like a duck for Halloween. Nov. 10: Miranda watches a toy move from one side of her to the other (crosses the midline). Nov. 18: Miranda attends...
Please, give me a pass
I’m not sure which part of raising kids kills brain cells. Is it the pregnancies? The sleep interruptions? The mundane repetition of picking up toys and reading the same children’s books every day? Yes! I had my baby. On Aug. 3, Miranda was born. I would have told the world, yet I couldn’t remember the password for my website. Almost six months later, I’m finally getting...

Almost there?
Thanks to Truman’s mom, who sums up Week 37 well: “I suffer through, exhausted but unable to sleep, in pain but not going anywhere, nesting but not finished with anything, working but not producing my top quality.” I agree.
Happy birthday, America
The Norman fireworks were spectacular this year. Rachel and Audrey described them as “beautiful” and “shimmery.” If you’re a big fan of fireworks and birthdays, make plans to be near the State Capitol for the Oklahoma Centennial Gala on Nov. 16. Rumor is this will be the biggest fireworks show the state has ever seen. Additionally, don’t miss the largest...
Cowboys & culture: A weekend in Fort Worth
Last month, I was honored to be a weekend guest of the Fort Worth Convention and Visitors Bureau. I accompanied my friend Kathie (she’s a convention planner) on a scouting trip of the city. I must admit when my family takes a weekend road trip, Dallas is usually our default destination. However, Fort Worth is impressive. It seems to offer just as much as her sister city, only with less...
Kid anecdotes
The girls were selecting clothes to wear for the day. Rachel chose a pastel pink outfit, and Audrey picked a shirt and shorts that were bright pink. Mom: Both of you are wearing pink today. Audrey, you have on hot pink. Audrey: Uh-huh! And Rachel has cold pink! ***** Rachel was watching the television show “CHiPs” with me while we were folding laundry. While Ponch and Jon were in a...

Brian Wood, Ryan Kelly visit Norman via Local No....
Norman is the heart of a new comic book from Oni Press already being hailed as one of the best of the year. Bizzell Memorial Library is prominently featured on the cover of “Local” No. 9, titled “Wish You Were Here.” The issue, written by Brian Wood and illustrated by Ryan Kelly, chronicles the physical and emotional journey of the main character, Megan. Megan has just gotten news of her mother’s...
